Nordic Names

nordic names website will answer all your questions about what all those names mean. I particularly liked the entry for Smilla a name made up by Danish author Peter Høeg in the book Smilla’s Feeling for Snow and now being used in Sweden.

  1. Peter Rickard says:

I am in Melbourne Australia and researching the history and meaning of my surname “Rickard”. Originally it was thought to be old German but I believe that it has an earlier origin from Norway. Any advice you can provide would be most grateful

Peter, well I don’t think I can advise youreally but what would I do in your situation? This is the webpage for Rikard on the nordic names website. It tends to confirm your suspicion that the spelling is at least more common in Norway. Write to the website and there is a link in the page I linked to above to the Norweigian National Statistics department, maybe they can help you.
However I would say that the name probably is from old german, norwegian being a germanic language. Just the spelling is a mainly nordic/norweigian in form. Good luck in your quest!
