Citywall

I saw the Citywall installation by students at HIIT yesterday which is one of those multi-touch screens hooked up to tagged images of Helsinki from flickr (film). Played around with the photos, the closest I’ll get to a Jeff Han touchscreen for a while I guess. It’s really nice playful installation for the summer, but [...]

Japan and Finland with a Shared Design Culture

Natural materials and the economy of their use seem to be a common theme see Pinmag for a flavour of the latest news from Japan, where they have featured several Finnish items. Oh and they like to make films over here to! Finland has established a considerable reputation in Japan. This is reflected in the [...]

Architecture of Control

I remember going to a lecture as a student about the strategies used in malls and large shops in attempting to control the behaviour of their clients. This handy A-Z of retail tricks (via) is a nice summary of the main ones. There is also a weblog called Architectures of Control in Design which takes [...]

Charles and Ray Eames

After attending a lecture by Max Underwood of Arizona state university about Charles and Ray Eames I became a great fan of their work. I hadn’t realised had produced some of the first multimedia presentations, worked with IBM, and at World Fairs. Their films too have at their core a design sensibility taken to a [...]

I have a Tommy Perman print on my wall bought at analogue. He is a great artist & one day I will listen to some of his music too. But in the meantime go to his website Surface Pressure and take a look.

The Pro-Am Revolution

Visiting Habitare and talking to some of the people at Solid Furniture (see previous post) put me in mind of the Pro-Am revolution talk hosted by Ulla which I wanted to go to but couldn’t make it luckily thanks to Ulla she podcasted it. It was about hacker, do it yourself culture, and was a [...]

Habitare05

I went to see Habitare 05 last weekend, which is Finland’s largest interior and Furniture trade show and takes place every two years and it coincided with Helsinki design week. We went to get a flavour of what is happening here and to look for some inspiration. I have put some photos on flickr as [...]

Block lamp

The Block lamp by Harri Koskinen is part of the permanent collection at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Koskinen has done some great designs for Issey Miyake and Iitala also. But the block lamp is my favourite.

Design District Helsinki

A design district has been ‘launched’ in Helsinki. That there was one already is self evident by just walking through that bit of the old town. You can download the pdf from the finnishdesign website although not from the english side! I have been noticing the same thing as Darren that finnish websites are often [...]

Translucent concrete

Saw this in city of sound which I can highly recommend. This translucent concrete sounds an amazing material and so counterintuitive- think about it, a structural material that you can see through! I’d love to see some in real life. Optic article . Andreas bittis . Liquid stone exhibition

syrup

Syrup finland is a design agency that I really like. They did all the Koneiesto graphics etc which I loved, but not for this year unfortuneately! Anyway hopefully this year Kirsi and me can go to at least one of the days and relive our ‘youth’. Syrupnyc
