Its quite big news because of the groupings these represent. Design, Technology and Economics meaning that policy makers in Finland clearly think that for Finland economically the way ahead is with technology based design in different disciplines.

Apart form being forward thinking to take this attitude, its of course a little controversial, how influential will the economics department be on the artists so to speak, and how well can they or should they integrate? I think there is probably a deeper underlying trend also and that is not only design as a key economic leader but that design and high technology are more and more integrated subconsciously into our daily lives and this is a common theme universally across disciplines.

It is licenced under a creative commons developing world licence so designs can be utilised in the areas most needed for free. I really think this will start to change the way we can implement architectural solutions around the world. It may even impact on the way we think about architectural design and the ideas behind it. Anyway Varnelis already wrote it up, as did ndb, and inhabitat have an interview with Cameron Sinclair himself.

The Architect Shigeru Ban has developed an exhibition of some 14 Alvar Aalto projects which will be showing at the Barbican in London (22 Feb ‘07 - 13 May ‘07). I hope this exhibition can be brought to Finland too so I can see it. I’ll have to make do with the review by Johnathan Glancey which is excellent, and one paragraph stands out in particular;

As for the Finn himself, he was no saint. Fond of the bottle, something of a philanderer, and certainly no soldier, even at a time when Finland needed all hands to hold back Stalin’s hordes, he nevertheless helped give his country something of the character of responsible inventiveness that continues to drive its economy and society today. (JG)

It’s a bit shallow to see one person in terms of a personality of a whole nation but somehow very tempting in this case, its also illuminating that Aatos work is sufficiently deep that it can out as exemplarary of many different, and contemporary subjects that people choose to read into it. I would also say that Sigeru Ban may come to be seen as fitting into this quite exclusive category of Architects in the future.

There are many other highlights as well though, Malcolm Gladwell and Steven Levitt offer a different perspective, Rick Warren fights it out with Dan Dennent. Ze Frank gives us comedy but the funniest speaker with a message is Sir Ken Robinson. They are adding every week so its worth checking in now and again.

The Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award which is sponsored by the Finnish Forestry industry was awarded to Peter Zumthor this year (via). See the pdf of award and the organisers website.

Even in Finland we talk about “Wow” architecture. The buildings are expected to astonish the viewer. I’m convinced that this is exactly the type of work that Peter Zumthor creates, with a whole spectrum of emotional range. However the impression left by his works is a long-lasting one. In his works, Zumthor constantly reinvents the building and it is done without the sole purpose of wanting to create something new and dazzling. Paradoxically enough, the result always returns to the tradition, to the archetypes of building. Each building by Zumthor is like the one-metre Iridium Model, with which the architects of the world have to measure their own creations. ( Chairman of the jury Mikko Heikkinen)

He gave a talk in Helsinki as well which I missed!

Previous winners are Richard Leplastrier in 2004, Kengo Kuma in 2002, and Renzo Piano in 2000.

Some terrible news that Porvoo Cathedral had a major fire at the weekend (via). It was a beautiful 13th Century part stone part timber Cathedral. So a couple of fires in major Finnish buildings within the space of a couple of weeks, accident or deliberate, its pretty suspicious? But while Makasiinit was due for demolition the next day anyway, the Porvoo fire is a real loss to the architectural heritage of Finland. Hopefully they can restore it to its former glory. It makes me doubly crazy that I’ve been in Finland almost two years now but never got round to visiting Porvoo yet which is a really beautiful old town, bah!

Updated: with Helsingin sanomat article & photo (Itä-uudenmaan pelastuslaitos) It doesn’t sound as bad as I first thought.

Did you know that the biggest charity in the world is dedicated to ‘innovation in the field of Architectural and Interior design.’ At some $36 Billion its bigger than the Gates Foundation which is a paltry $27 billion by comparison. But while the Gates Foundation goes around giving out money to fight disease and deprivation around the world, the Stichting Anka Foundation appears to do, well…… nothing at all. Ingvar Kamprad one of the worlds richest men set up the Foundation years ago and it basically owns Ikea. The Foundation as shown by The Economist doesn’t follow its founding brief at all but is simultaneously a way of insuring the Ikea group can never be taken over and perhaps also the biggest tax dodge in the world. This is all well and good but it seems to me that it is all very well being frugal but there is alot of good that this money could be doing while it may basically be held in limbo forever. As an Architect I really have alot of time for Ikea. I really like their design principals and some of their philosophy, you know what you get with them and they provide accessibility to design for everyone which is I think unique and the key reason why they are so successful, but look a little below the surface into the heart of the company and it starts to look, well, sometimes a little creepy.
