A couple of daily free papers you get on your commute are uutislehti100 and metro (which you can download in pdf format the latest edition). The big paper in Helsinki is Helsingin Sanomat but maybe thats too advanced for me yet. There is a weekly printed newspaper printed in easy Finnish called selkouutiset or clearness news, you can get from the academic bookshop can’t find a web link at the moment.

There is a simplifed news podcast released every day by TLE which I’m finding really useful.

A great links page at the university site.

Also see my first post about Learning Finnish.

I’m changing the theme of lewism because I wanted a change and to freshen up the look of the site a bit having been using the fauna theme since I moved to wordpress. Also I want to be able to change the look of the site a little bit easier and that means using the excellent sandbox so I can learn a little css but not have to mess with any php. I’ll start with a small mod of Will’s moopoint style which is my favourite skin for the sandbox, and we’ll see how it goes from there. If you are reading from a rss feed swing over and take a look and tell me what you think.

I am going to Copenhagen on an office trip in a few weeks time. Lots of Architectural sightseeing to do and maybe just walking round the city enjoying the atmosphere.
So I’ve been doing a bit of research and have to say that CopenhagenX is easily the best Architectural website for any city I have yet to see. Everything is mapped, there are podcast walks of the city, and its all tied up to real life exhibitions and publications. Also some other sites I will be checking out are visitcopenhagen, and the Danish Architecture Centre.

Does anyone have any recommendations places to see, shops to visit, a Danish CD to buy or some particular favourite place?

I don’t often write about food but I would like to more. I was back in Edinburgh over Easter and my brother cooked us all something called Shish Barak a dish from Lebanon. The recipe comes from the excellent book Arabesque by Claudia Roden. Much to my surprise there is even a Lebanese restaurant in Helsinki called Farouge on Yrjönkatu 6, (+358 9 6123455). Which must be worth investigating. Anyway I copied down the recipe for Shish Barak and now I only have to find somewhere to buy my Pomegranate Molasses.

Shish Barak from Kamal Mouzawak serves 6 as a main course.

Ingrediants

Filling

2 Large Onions

3 Tablespoons of Sunflower oil

75g Pine Nuts

500g Lean minced Beef/Lamb

Salt and Black Pepper to taste

2 Teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 Teaspoon Ground allspice

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1-2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses

Pastry

6 sheets of filo pastry(170g ish)

85g Butter, melted

Sauce & Garnish

1 kg Natural Yogurt (note this was too much when my brother cooked it try half!)

salt

2-3 cloves garlic

4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon of crushed dried mint

Cooking Instructions

For the filling fry the onions until golden. Add the meat, salt, pepper, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, then pomegranate molasses and cook for a couple of minutes. In a small pan fry the pine nuts in a drop of oil for a short time then add the meat and let cool.

Cut the filo pastry sheets into half, into 2 rectangles approx 30×24cm and pile on top with long side nearest to you. Brush the top sheet with melted butter. Put a line of filling about 3-4 tablespoons, along the long edge, to about 2cm from each end, and roll up into a long thin roll. Then shape the roll into a tight coil, creasing it a little as youo do, so the pastry does not tear, and place it on a piece of foil (not greased) on a baking tray. Repeat with the remaining filo and the filling, placing the coils next to each other so that they are held tight. Brush the tops with melted butter.

About 30 mins before you are ready to serve, bake the pies in an oven pre-heated to 200 c 400f gas 6 for about 25 mins until golden.

For the sauce, beat the yoghurt with a little salt and the garlic, for the garnish, mix the olive oil and the dried mint. Serve the pies as they come out of the oven. Pour about 3 tablespoons ypghurt over each, and dribble a little of minty olive oil.

Variation

For Kamal’s veg. filling fry 4 large onions in 4 tablespoons oil until brown, add 150g, pine nuts, salt, papper, 3 tablespoons of ground mixed spices (cinnamon, alllspice, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, cumin,) and 1 1/2 tablespoons pomegranate molasses.

Current holders are Georgia but Scoland can become Champions for four days until they take on Italy where they will have a chance to unify the FIFA and UFWC championships and become undisputed champions of the world. Come on Scotland!

Update:

We won messily 2-1, so we are World Champions for a couple of days at least.

Last weekend we went to Tampere and I had a quick guided driving tour of the city at night although I couldn’t afford any time for a closer look. I like the feel of the city, it seems to be thriving and well worth a visit. Reima and Raili Pietilä are the most famous modern architects who worked in Tampere. Also the Näsinneula tower sits in the centre of the city overlooking everything, and I think it’s still the tallest building in Finland. My nightime photos came out ridiculously badly, which is why we will be getting a new camera very soon.

So I have moved lewism.org over to wordpress. The reasons? well I want to expand the site to add a few features that can easily be done with wordpress, I like the community and would like to learn a bit more about weblogs and blogging in general rather than just logging in and writing. I have moved over with the guys at freshlypressed who have been really helpful. The move will break peoples permalinks so I’m really sorry for that but better earlier than later. Expect some new areas of this site soon, and sorry for any weirdness in the meantime. I’ll be fixing links to files and images for a while I guess, but anyway I am quite excited about the change and will be trying to take this site to the next level over the coming months.

Update: My feed path has changed also so anyone subscribing to one of my feeds should check it and resubscribe at the same address.

An interesting postcard came through our door a few weeks ago. It has a link to a website on it explaining the details (in Finnish only I’m afraid). It comes from a number of villages in Finland, and is an appeal to ex-members of those villages to relocate back there, and it seems to be part of a campaign to get families to move back to those villages, in short a counter-urbanisation strategy. My wife comes from Hartola which explains why we got one, and it seems they are backing up their PR with heavily discounted land prices to encourage people to buy and build there. It is interesting that Finland urbanised later than most European countries but very quickly after WWII and that now the paper industry (production at least) seems to be on the wain here that these villages want or need to try and keep their populations, and fight the general trend of urbanisation. Finnish people, you can’t help but notice also have a love affair with nature, or at least the Kesämoki or summer cottage, where the Finnish family can escape from the city for the summer and get back in touch with their country roots. This paper is really interesting insight into the issues for Finland for their urbanisation, ‘the great move’ in the fifties and sixties where the baby boom generation was born in the country but now mostly lives in the cities. The postcard is an interesting strategy to challenge the slow decline of the countryside outside of the Kesämoki lifestyle.

I’ve been listening too the bbc at work recently. I think unlike previous generations of expats you can keep in touch with almost all aspects of life from back ‘home’ and not feel so cut off. I can forinstance go to the news page to keep up to date and even watch programmes like the Ten O’Clock news or Question Time while I work at the office. On one level its like I never really left the UK. However I find I have a different perspective on things in the UK now I’m not living there. British Politicals seem so confrontational and empty of real debate compared to how I felt about it when I lived there, so my life has changed. But thanks to the bbc anyway for always being a click away. They have also been reporting on Finland recently see this article.

Happy birthday dad today,& congratulations again on your forthcoming new book! Buy one of my dads books here from amazon.com or amazon.co.uk. I have some great childhood memories of reading my dad’s books with him but don’t just take my word for it here is a quote of a review from Amazon

Giftwish… ahhhh what a wonderful book! I still re-read it from time to time. True, I am an avid fantasy reader and a big Tolkien fan, but I think Graham Dunstan Martin is a great writer, comparisons apart. Giftwish is the archetypal story of a boy growing up and passing tests in order to prove that he is the “chosen one”. But don’t be fooled by the apparently simplistic storyline. The language is superb, the descriptions breathtaking. I can close my eyes and see myself riding in the woods with Evan. Martin makes you go there, and actually care for his characters. If you like good fantasy stuff, i.e. are tired of sad ripoffs, give Giftwish a chance. And in the middle of Harry Potter fever, a book containing a fair share of magic shenaningans (and an interesting explanation of magic) is surely worth straying far from the beaten track.

So what are you all waiting for? go order…..

We went out on Saturday evening for the first time for months and months, and ate at a restaurant called Carelia. Quite unusual for Helsinki it has the atmosphere of an older age, and that’s because it has the interior of an old Pharmacy from the 1920’s. It really has that interwar art-deco feeling which gives it a certain atmosphere rare here.

The food was excellent, I always think its a good sign when the menu has quite limited choices, and the wine list apparently is very good as it comprises of wines you can’t get at alko which has the wine monopoly of distribution in Finland apart from Restaurants. Our wine really was excellent maybe edging out the food. Definitely worth considering if you have had enough of those trendy modern interiors most common in Finnish Restaurants

Me & Kirsi watched Finnish Wifeswap yesterday and realy enjoyed it. On the face of it we should have been bored by the whole thing, as the families got through the swap without any arguments, all changes made seemed to be pretty non confrontational and everything was taken in perspective and rationally. Are Finnish T.V. producers crazy? It doesn’t make for exciting T.V….The UK and U.S.A. versions are much more explosive and toe curling and are thus good entertainment of the best voyeuristic mind candy kind. But the Finns have managed to turn it into a sensible program which probably won’t do their ratings any good but gave us both a good laugh at the relative differences in Finnish society compared to the UK. The episode last night forinstance had a husband coming back from work not being allowed a customary beer on getting home, no problem he said to the camera, worse things have happened! In the U.K. version this would have been proof of the other families total moral/social delinquency and both parties would have exploded into a confrontation of fundamental life principals with a bit of swearing thrown in for good measure. Somehow I can’t think that families are that different in the UK and Finland, maybe its just british people are less aware of television and their image on it,or maybe its that there are different public boundaries of good taste!

I spent most of yesterday at work in a quiet frenzy at work because of the Cricket. I was so tense I could hardly concentrate on anything else but the Radio coverage on the internet all passed by obliviously by my Finnish work colleagues. Such are these times you truely feel like a fish out of the water and yesterday was the first time for a long time I truely wished I was in a pub in central London with a few friends not so quietly toasting the return of the ashes after 16 years. Strange how the cultural dividing line can become a sporting occasion which engulfs one nation and which I quietly shared as an expat by proxy in turns feeling sickness, relief and elation while the rest of the world around me passed by in ignorance.

My friend Jurgen is coming to visit us in Finland next month. Great to see you mate! It’s a small detour from the main event where he is going to build an earthship in Sweden. NL branch is here. I really believe the future of architecture will be designing in ecological thinking and technology of different levels into all building types. But having said that look at the treehugger entry for earthship and you will see the problem! The buildings themselves signal to me the kind of eco architecture I’m a little sceptical of, namely that of a building template that ‘looks’ right and is applied in all situations no matter where in the globe and what the site is. Also what about designing in the city environment where more and more of the worlds population will end up living? Anyway the Cult thing mentioned in treehugger is maybe a little overblown but Jurgen try not to listen to too much Grateful Dead and I’ll see you soon!
