The MareNostrum in Barcelona is Europes biggest Supercomputer to date. The Photographer Simon Norfolk has documented it with a series of amazing images (like the one shown). The MareNostrum is housed in an old Chapel and thus according to Simon it has become a Divine container for the omnipresent super brain or perhaps alternatively the anti-divine emotionless incontemplateable other. Simon recalls Kubriks HAL in Space Odessey and Jacques de Vaucansons Duck in 18th Century France as defining moments of mans relationship with machine, I would also add the name which means ‘our sea’ reminds me of Solaris by Stanislav Lem where we see an Alien Sea unknowable by man.
