Learning Finnish # 2

I’ve started my new course at the university again learning Finnish, trying to do some basic following of the Finnish Media so below is a kind of part Linkdump part commentary on whats out there.

A couple of daily free papers you get on your commute are uutislehti100 and metro (which you can download in pdf format the latest edition). The big paper in Helsinki is Helsingin Sanomat but maybe thats too advanced for me yet. There is a weekly printed newspaper printed in easy Finnish called selkouutiset or clearness news, you can get from the academic bookshop can’t find a web link at the moment.

There is a simplifed news podcast released every day by TLE which I’m finding really useful.

A great links page at the university site.

Also see my first post about Learning Finnish.

Architecture Lectures at Harvard

Some Architectural Lectures (via) from Harvard School of Design. The Webcasts page has a full list. I’ve only watched Rem Koolhaus and Ben van Berkel so far, but its a wonderful resource, and something which all design schools should be doing. Now I am using a tagging system as well as a category system on this website you can easily visit all the audio and video links I’ve referred to by checking out the webcast tag.

Ted Talks

I have been very busy at work but have been enjoying the Ted Talks while sitting at my computer. For the Architects among you there are Cameron Sinclair and Joshua Prince-Ramus giving talks. There are many other highlights as well though, Malcolm Gladwell and Steven Levitt offer a different perspective, Rick Warren fights it out with Dan Dennent. Ze Frank gives us comedy but the funniest speaker with a message is Sir Ken Robinson. They are adding every week so its worth checking in now and again. Here is the full list of speakers that you can see.

Audible Architecture

Some links to sites with Architectural content in audio,

architecture on 3 is bbc radio 3 page devoted to architecture with a great archive that I intend to start delving into (the radio interview archive picks up a few more architects together with artists etc which is also well worth a delve). Architecture Radio has public lectures etc. Also Radio 4 has an old archive of interviews with architects including Le Corb, Albert Speer, James Stirling and others, Rogers being the only one there whos not dead on that list! If anyone knows any more links to design related podcasts etc, please feel free to comment or drop me an email.
